MP Waheed released despite PG raising charges

Criminal Court has ordered the release of MP for Thulusdhoo constituency Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim, with stipulations.

The lawmaker was released upon being brought to Court on Thursday, for his fourth remand hearing.

At Waheed's last remand hearing on August 13th, where he was given four additional days, the Court had asked prosecutors to reach a decision on whether or not to prosecute him, before the four-day period expires.

Raising three charges on him, the police and prosecutors requested to keep him in remand until his trial concludes and a verdict is reached. However, presiding Judge Ali Ibrahim said there was no reason to keep him in detention.

The three charges raised on him are; disruption, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and justice. If found guilty of the charges, he will receive a sentence of seven months.

The conditions imposed on him by the Court are, not to partake in any unlawful activties, and to cooperate with investigation.

MP Waheed was arrested on July 24, for entering the Parliament premises that day with a number of other opposition members.
