Drug trafficking suspect
Man accused of drug trafficking, remanded
Materials and equipment used for drug peddling, were confiscated
The apartment in which the drugs were found, was used for drug peddling operations
Sufficient evidence has been submitted against him

A man arrested over drug trafficking allegations, has been remanded.

Remanded in connection with the case is a 36-year-old Maldivian man.

The man is accused of consuming, possessing and trafficking illegal narcotics.

The Criminal Court ordered for him to be remanded for a period of 15 days, which will expire on 18 May 2024.

The court order states that there is sufficient against him to prove the allegations pinned on him.

As such, according to a statement submitted by an officer of the Maldives Police Service (MPS), it was found that more than four kilograms of drugs were recovered from an apartment linked to the suspect.

The Criminal Court cited the reason for his remand to have been that a massive quantity of drugs were recovered in connection with the case and as it is believed that the apartment where the drugs were confiscated was used for drug peddling operations, with the participation of a group of people, according to the intelligence report.

Further, it has been noted that materials and equipment used for drug peddling, were confiscated from the apartment.

The court also observed that if the suspect is released on bail, it will pose a threat to the safety and security of the community, as he is suspected to be actively involved in smuggling drugs into the country.

The court order was issued by Judge Ali Nadheem.
