Two individuals have been remanded over drug peddling allegations.

Remanded in connection with the case is a 26-year-old Maldivian man and a 30-year-old man.

The Criminal Court ordered their remand following a request by the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

The court has ordered for them to be remanded at a custodial prison.

The 26-year-old was slapped with a 15-day remand and the 30-year-old was given 10 days in remand.

The reason cited for their remand was that sufficient evidence was submitted against the accused.

A hefty number of narcotics and a bottle of alcohol were confiscated from the apartment of the suspects.

Police revealed that the apartment was in a Vinares tower.

Officers that raided the apartment found their ID cards inside a wallet inside the living room, where suspected narcotics were also found.

900 rubber packets filled with narcotics were found inside a backpack stuffed inside the closet of a room, where a digital scale and 33 pieces of cellophane filled with suspected narcotics, were also confiscated.

Belongings and documents linked to the suspects were also found inside the closet.

Further, it was also revealed that the urine sample collected from the 30-year-old suspect, tested positive for THC, as per provisional results.

The circumstances under which the remand was ordered was in view of the provisions of Article 49 of the Constitution of Maldives and Sections 59 and 60 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in view of the threat to the safety and security of the community.

The reason for the condition of detention is that the provisions of Section 13(c) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 3 and 4 of the Code of Criminal Procedure pertaining to the trial are satisfied.

The 26-year-old suspect confessed that the things found in the living room were his, however, he claimed that the drugs found inside the backpack did not belong to him. He said that the backpack was given to him by somebody else and that the other suspect in the case had no clue and were not linked to any of the confiscated drugs.

The 26-year-old has a record of arrests and remands. His current remand will expire on May 12 and the 30-year-old’s remand will expire on May 7.
