The government has announced that the Republic Square water fountain will reopen in time for Eid-Al-Fitr.

The project is being carried out as part of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar revealed that the project to repair the damaged water fountain at the Republic Square in the capital Malé City is ongoing in full swing.

Although the aim was to reopen the water fountain in time for the concluding fasting month of Ramadan, it will now be reopened in time for Eid-Al-Fitr.

The project to repair the Republic Square water fountain is being carried out with some modifications.

In a post on social media platform ‘X’ on 20 January 2024, Minister Shareef revealed that they were working to reopen the water fountain in time for Ramadan, which began on 11 March 2024.

However, the project was not carried out at an adequate speed.

This comes at a time efforts are also being carried out to put up lights and banners to welcome Eid.

The water fountain at Republic Square was established during the administration of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, to commemorate the 50th Independence Day of Maldives.

The “musical fountain” stretches up to 28 meters in width and 28 meters in length.

Due to failure to maintain the fountain, it has been damaged for a while now.
