The Republic Square water fountain has been renovated and unveiled in time for Eid-Al-Fitr.

The project was carried out as part of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

Although the aim was to reopen the water fountain in time for the concluding fasting month of Ramadan, it was reopened in time for Eid-Al-Fitr.

The project to repair the Republic Square water fountain was carried out with some modifications.

In a post on social media platform ‘X’ on 20 January 2024, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar revealed that they were working to reopen the water fountain in time for Ramadan, which began on 11 March 2024.

However, the project was not carried out at the expected speed.

Festive lights have also been put up across the capital, to invoke the spirit of Eid within the community.

The water fountain at Republic Square was established during the administration of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, to commemorate the 50th Independence Day of Maldives.

The “musical fountain” stretches upto 28 meters in width and 28 meters in length.

Due to failure to maintain the fountain, it had remained abandoned for a while.

The Jumhooree Fountain was unveiled by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Monday evening.
