An inmate doing time at Hulhumalé Prison has died.
This was revealed by the Maldives Correctional Service on Monday.
The authority confirmed that a man who was serving his sentence at the prison complex in the capital city’s suburban extension, passed away on Sunday night.
The deceased inmate has been identified as Ahmed Ijaaz, 44 and native to Maduvvari island of Raa atoll.
The corrections department revealed that Ijaaz was rushed to Hulhumalé Hospital on 8 March 2024 after he reported to have trouble breathing.
He received treatment at the hospital’s emergency room before being transferred to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on March 9.
Ijaaz was suffering from tuberculosis (TB) and was receiving treatment at IGMH’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his condition deteriorated.
He is to have been placed on ventilator support as well.
Ijaaz was pronounced dead at around 11:30pm on Sunday.
The inmate was serving a three-year sentence behind bars at Hulhumalé Prison, on charges related to drug abuse.
Ijaaz was transferred to Hulhumalé Prison on 7 March 2024.
The corrections authority had informed his family as well as relevant authorities such as the Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and the National Integrity Commission following his death.
