The government of Maldives remains committed to work alongside the Commonwealth family to address and tackle mutual challenges, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

He said this in a message of felicitations he sent on the occasion of this year’s Commonwealth Day.

Highlighting that this year’s Commonwealth Day comes at an opportune moment to summon the spirit of unity to ensure a prosperous and resilient future, Muizzu stated that today, the rich diversity, common values and norms advocated in the Commonwealth Charter are celebrated.

Muizzu added that the Commonwealth is an important partner for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as the Maldives.

Noting that it has been a strong advocate for climate action, increased and simplified access to finance, gender equality, increased trade and building resilience, the Maldivian leader said that these are all very significant factors.

This, he said is why this year’s theme resonates with the interests of the Maldivian government.

The Commonwealth Day’s theme for this year is “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Commonwealth”.

The president shed light on how far it has come as it celebrates the 75th anniversary this year, adding that unified efforts have helped place people at the heart of sustainable development.

Muizzu noted that it has also helped address and overcome the vulnerabilities and pushed to deliver shared commitments.

Highlighting that there is immense advantage with joint efforts, Muizzu expressed gratitude for the Commonwealth’s commitment to find solutions to shared challenges in the lead up to, during and beyond the Commonwealth Heads of the Government Meeting in Samoa later this year.

He reiterated the administration’s commitment to work within the Commonwealth family to explore new ways to address common challenges as the path is paved for a common future and commonwealth.

Maldives rejoined the Commonwealth on 1 February 2020, after a four-year hiatus. This was described as a symbol of the administration of former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s commitment to engage with the international community and deliver pledges to the people “in good faith”.
