The second phase of the Fuvahmulah internal roads construction project, has commenced.

This was revealed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company on Monday.

As such, taking to social media platform ‘X’, MTCC revealed that the groundbreaking ceremony to mark the commencement of the second phase of the Fuvahmulah internal roads construction project took place on Monday, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s tour of some islands in the south of Maldives which he began on Sunday morning.

The president inaugurated the project.

He was accompanied by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muttalib, Mayor of Fuvahmulah City Ismail Rafeeq and Chief Executive Officer of MTCC, Abdulla Ziyad at the ceremony.

The president is accompanied by a high-level delegation of government officials during the tour.

MTCC provided the latest update of the first phase of the Fuvahmulah internal roads construction project back in May 2023, when the project had neared completion. The project had reached 86 percent progress by May 2023.

Under the scope of the project included sub-base preparation in an area measuring 122,659 square meters, an asphalt wearing course of 95,239 square meters as well as a footpath preparation of 27,450 square meters.

Further, MTCC will be making road markings, installing streetlights and conducting storm water drainage work in an area measuring 19,940 meters.

The first phase of the Fuvahmulah internal roads construction project was valued at MVR 302.72 million.

The project saws the development of 31 roads with an overall length of 15,932 meters, according to MTCC.

MTCC was contracted the project by the previous government’s Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure on 4 July 2019. The project was mobilized on 23 July 2019.
