The Police Board has recommended the appointment of Assistant Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, as the new Police Commissioner.
Applications were opened for the vacated post of Police Commissioner in mid-December and the window closed on December 19.
By the time the application deadline expired, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen had applied for the post.
Minister of Homeland Security Ali Ihsan has confirmed the police board’s recommendation to appoint Shujau as the new Commissioner of Police, to RaajjeMV.
According to the Police Services Act, an officer ranked Assistant Commissioner or higher, has to be appointed as a Police Commissioner.
The appointment will be made after the Police Board conducts interviews of applicants.
Further, the appointment will be made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, following recommendations from the minister based on the names recommended to the minister by the Police Board.
Previous Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed retired from his position on November 15.
Deputy Commissioner Abdul Mannan Yoosuf who temporarily assumed the role following Hameed’s retirement, also retired.
