Discussions have been held regarding efforts made towards achieving global health targets.
The discussions were held between Maldivian Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday.
The meeting was held on Monday as part of the Maldivian vice president’s official visit to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75).
Expressing gratitude to the organization for the continuous assistance and support extended to the Maldivian government over the course of the years, VP Latheef briefed the Director General of WHO on the new administration’s key priorities.
He noted that there are still many challenges to overcome, despite the island nation’s success in making significant progress in healthcare, over recent decades.
VP Latheef went on to shed light on the need to overcome these obstacles.
Further, he assured the commitment of the Maldivian government to make dependable, high-quality healthcare a top priority for the incumbent administration’s policy in the next five years.
VP Latheef and the WHO Director General expressed mutual interest in working together on implementing health strategies and in striving towards achieving global health targets.
Since the 1950s, WHO has been active in the Maldives and established its office in 1965.
