The government is to establish a Fisheries College in the Maldives.
This was announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu while speaking at the function held to mark the 43rd Fishermen's Day at Dharubaaruge on Sunday.
Unveiling plans to set up a first-of-its-kind Fisheries College in the Maldives, the president noted that the Fisheries College would be established in collaboration with the Maldives National University (MNU).
He also revealed that administrative efforts to implement the plan are currently in motion as part of the administration’s 'Hafthaa 14' roadmap.
Shedding light on efforts aimed at the progress of the fisheries sector, President Muizzu revealed plans to conduct a special training programme to ensure that every fishing vessel has at least one crew member certified as a "rescue diver."
President Muizzu also touched upon the high priority his administration’s manifesto places for the community of fishermen across the Maldives.
Announcing plans to create a dedicated agency to advertise and promote fish products to foreign markets under a distinctive Maldivian brand, the president also detailed ongoing and future initiatives to enhance the welfare and prosperity of fishermen.
Sunday’s event also saw President Muizzu presenting awards to 19 deserving recipients of the Fishermen's Day prizes.
The event was also joined by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.
