Two individuals have been arrested under accusations of attempting to smuggle alcohol.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that officers acted on a tip-off in arresting the two Maldivian men, who attempted to smuggle alcohol into Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll.
The operation was conducted jointly by the police officers stationed on Villingili island and officers of the Police Intelligence Unit on December 4.
A 37-year-old and a 43-year-old were arrested in connection with the case.
Following their arrest, officers conducted a raid on a speedboat and a car they are suspected to be linked to, which led to the confiscation of 75 bottles of alcohol.
Upon being presented to the Villingili Magistrate Court for their remand hearing, the two individuals were given 15 days in remand.
The Villingili Police Station is conducting further investigations in connection with the case.
