96 cases of violence against children were reported to authorities in August alone

The Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Service received and attended a total of 254 cases, including 96 cases of violence against children, during August alone.

The ministry publicized statistics for the eighth month of the ongoing year, revealing that the authority received and attended a total of 254 cases.

These include cases of violence against children, domestic violence, gender-based violence, family issues, care and support issues, behavioral problems, child rights violations, self-harming and suicidal behavior, social support and well-being and cases of children in conflict with the law.

96 cases of violence against children were reported to authorities in August alone.

Out of these, a majority involved cases of children falling victim to negligence. 25 children were reported to have been neglected.

The remaining cases include 18 cases of sexual abuse, 13 cases of physical abuse inflicted on children, 12 children falling victim to emotional abuse. Further, 22 cases of children having witnessed domestic violence, two cases of bullying, one case of harassment, one other, one victim of cyber bullying and one case of blackmail.

59 girls and 37 boys were victims of violence in the past month.

Further, of the 45 cases linked to gender-based violence and domestic violence reported in August 15 were of emotional and verbal abuse, 20 were of physical violence and abuse, two were of intimidation, four were of sexual violence and abuse and four other cases were also reported.

In addition to this, 44 cases were to do with family issues, of which 17 were related to access to the child, 18 victims were identified to have parenting issues, three were issues related to maintenance and six relating to rights to custody and access to the child.

25 boys and 19 girls were victims of family issues.

The ministry also received 12 cases of self-harm and suicidal behavior during August. These included five victims of self-harm including four girls and one boy, three victims who had suicidal behavior including one boy and two girls as well as three boys and one girl with suicidal thoughts.

Throughout August, 34 cases of care and support for the elderly and persons with disabilities were also reported. These include 29 cases of failure to give care and support for persons with disabilities and five cases of failure to give care and support for the elderly.

The ministry also reported eight cases of behavioral problems including five boys and three girls. Out of these, four children refused to attend school and two ran away from home. Five other cases are included among these.

Further, the ministry also received eight cases of child rights violations where six girls and two boys are involved. Two of them were stripped of their right to education, two were denied birth registration and the parents or guardians or four children refused to send them to school.

Also, two girls were reported to be in violation of the law.

Statistics go on to indicate that 169 children were under state care by the end of August, including 95 boys and 74 girls.

Three boys and one girl were reintegrated with families and two boys, and two girls were taken into state care.

Moreover, a boy and a girl were placed with a foster family during August, with six boys who turned 18, having been reintegrated to the society with a job.
