The man arrested under accusations of domestic violence from Madaveli island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll, has been jailed pending the end of his trial.

The Madaveli Magistrate Court ordered to put him behind bars pending the end of his trial.

Arrested in connection with the case which has churned massive public outcry, is a 33-year-old man.

The man is accused of assaulting a young woman, who sources report is his lover.

A video clip showing the man assaulting the woman went viral on social media on Tuesday. The video in question, shows the man dragging the young woman down the street before beginning to assault her, onlookers are heard screaming and the man is soon stopped by other bystanders. Police officers are also seen arriving at the scene shortly after.

At a time this has churned public outrage, the case has come to the attention of authorities as well.

As such, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has also strictly condemned the act. The victim, upon being release from the island’s health center following treatment for injuries attained in the assault, has been given protection by the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.

The gender ministry has also forwarded the case to the Maldives Police Service.
