A number of arrests have been made in connection with an alcohol smuggling attempt.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that their intelligence unit received a tip off, which led to an operation being conducted in Gan island of Laamu atoll on June 29.
During the operation conducted jointly by intelligence officers and the Gan Police Station, four Maldivian men were arrested for attempting to smuggle alcohol.
Arrested were a 39-year-old, a 41-year-old, a 42-year-old and a 56-year-old.
They were arrested near the Gan harbor region and officers confiscated 72 bottles of alcohol inside the dinghy they were traveling in.
Upon being presented to the Gan Magistrate Court for their remand hearing, the 39-year-old was remanded for five days, and the remaining three were given 10 days in remand, at a facility allocated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Gan Police Station is currently conducting further investigations in connection with the alcohol smuggling case.
