On 24 February 2022 during the second trip, the president underwent thyroid surgery following doctors’ advice. After a successful surgery, the president and his spouse returned to Maldives on 6 March 2022.

As required by law, at the time, the presidential responsibilities were temporarily transferred to Vice President Faisal Naseem, as stipulated under Article 126 of the Maldives’ Constitution.

Although doctors had advised him to rest after the surgery, the president continued to fulfil his presidential duties and holding meetings as well as gatherings and events, upon his return.
