Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has said that the prosecution is working on raising three charges against Mohamed Nizam, native to Thinadhoo Island of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, who was arrested in connection to the murder of Bangladeshi national Mohamed Liton.

The Prosecutor General made the statement during a press conference held on Sunday.

PG Shameem shared with the press, the details of the latest information on the charges against Nizam in connection with Liton’s murder.

The PG stated that the prosecution is getting ready to raise charges against Nizam. As such, he stated that the prosecution will file deliberate murder, theft, and drug-dealing charges against Nizam.

Shameem went onto say that Nizam’s testimonies and other evidence suggest that Liton died because of him.

Shameem went on to say that the prosecution would prove in court that Nizam's actions could have killed someone. He stated that he will examine Supreme Court decisions as well as rules adopted in other nations to do so.

For example, the PG stated that hiding a person's body after killing him is not an excuse not to prosecute him.

Furthermore, the PG explained that Nizam is being charged with theft since he is alleged to have taken money from the boat. He said that there is enough evidence to support this as well.

Shameem added that Nizam was in possession of drugs at the time of his arrest.

Nizam and Liton went missing on a fuel barge, after departing from Vilimale’. They were reported missing on 28 December, 2022.

While the barge was found near Hulhule' on 29 December, 2022, neither of the two men were onboard.

MPS later found Nizam hiding in a guest house in Hulhumale.

MPS arrested Nizam under a court order, in relation to the murder case on 03 January, 2023. He was remanded for 60 days.
