Some members of the People’s Majlis have claimed majlis proceedings are not in order, and has taken their frustrations to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
As such, the parliamentarians headed to the Presidential residence Mulee’aage on Tuesday, reportedly to share their dissatisfaction regarding the way the parliament sitting are being carried out.
Before that, lawmakers had voiced discontent and frustration during Tuesday’s sitting, regarding the delays at the parliament in voting on the state-proposed tax hike bill.
Tuesday’s sitting was concluded abruptly without taking a poll on the state-proposed tax hike bill, making it the second day such an action was taken by the Speaker.
A complete report of the Whole House Committee on the bill had been presented to the parliament floor during Monday’s sitting. However, the sitting was abruptly halted without going for a vote, citing the lack of quorum to take the poll, as the MPs had not requested to debate on the report.
This led to a wave of criticism and displeasure from lawmakers.
Former President and current Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Tuesday, stated that the sitting had been adjourned in accordance with the stipulated regulations on Monday.
