Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Abdulla Shahid has sent a message of condolence to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Park Jin, following the stampede in Itaewon, Seoul.
Minister’s message read that it was with deep shock and sorrow that he learned of the tragic incident in Itaewon, claiming the loss of lives and injuring many.
Minister Shahid in his message stated that the Government and the people of Maldives convey heartfelt condolences to the families and friends who lost their loved ones.
Wishing for a quick recovery for those injured, Minister Shahid stated that our thoughts and prayers are with the Government and people of the Republic of Korea as they mourn this horrific incident.
More than 150 people were killed in a stampede on Saturday night in the South Korean capital Seoul, where a huge crowd gathered for Halloween activities, the firefighting authorities said.
More than 150 others were injured in the accident that took place in the popular nightclub district of the city's Itaewon district.
Authorities issued a third-phase order for emergency response, which is usually for serious large-scale disasters.
The country's National Fire Agency (NFA), the central administrative agency that administers firefighting affairs, said 90 ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
South Korean police revealed that more than 100,000 people gathered around the Itaewon district for the annual Halloween festivities at the time of the accident.
South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol on Sunday visited the site of a stampede. He has also declared a period of national mourning.
