At a time heavy floods have wreaked havoc across Pakistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that all Maldivians registered in Pakistan are safe.
In a message to media, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that currently, 67 Maldivians are registered at the High Commission of Maldives in Islamabad, Pakistan.
The ministry revealed that most Maldivians reside in Lahore or Karachi and that the High Commission is in touch with the Maldivians registered across the regions.
They all have been reported to be safe.
Further, the ministry informed that the High Commission is closely monitoring the situation, as it unfolds.
Earlier, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih extended sympathies to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif as well as the government and people of the country. He revealed that the government is saddened to hear of the devastation caused by floods in Pakistan, which has now claimed over a thousand lives and displaced millions more.
At a time more than 33 million residents of Pakistan have been adversely affected by the monsoon floods in the country, the country’s armed forces have been on the frontlines providing assistance in different ways.
While thousands have lost their homes in the floods, some regions have been experiencing heavy rainfall for over two months, resulting in heavy floods in vast regions and the death of atleast 1,300 residents.
The floods have caused many buildings and bridges to collapse, and efforts to provide supplies to the residents are also halted as many roads are blocked.
Pakistani residents in the flooded areas face tough and difficult times, with electricity and internet access also cut across the area, and with numerous challenges facing transportation.
