An inmate who was doing time at Hulhumalé Prison, has died.

The deceased inmate has been identified as 58-year-old Ali Mohamed, native of Himandhoo island in Alif Alif atoll.

Mohamed was in his prison cell when he began experiencing breathing difficulties. This prompted immediate medical treatment from the Medical Center at the prison complex.

However, he was rushed to Hulhumalé Hospital after his health began deteriorating.

The 58-year-old Himandhoo native succumbed to his ailment while receiving treatment. He was pronounced dead by Hulhumalé Hospital doctors at around 03:20pm, the Maldives Correctional Service revealed.

Mohamed was charged with carrying out sexual relations with a minor and was serving a 10-year prison sentence at the time of his death.

The corrections authority has also revealed that they had informed the family of the deceased alongside Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service (MPS), Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission, after Mohamed was rushed to the hospital.
