Swell surges expected during high tides, warns MET
MMS also revealed that southern atolls will experience mainly fine weather

Maldives Meteorological Service has advised caution at a time swell wave surges have been predicted during high tide times.

The advisory was issued by the department on Monday, at a time Maldives has been immersed in bad weather due to the adverse effects of the southwest monsoon.

As such, the MMS department revealed that swell wave surges are likely during high tides, with which all، especially seafarers have been advised to practice caution.

The weather department forecast fairly widespread rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms across northern atolls and some parts of central atolls.

MMS also revealed that southern atolls will experience mainly fine weather, with winds gusting southwest to westerly at 17 – 27 miles per hour in central and northern atolls and 10 – 20 miles per hour in the south.

Further, during showers winds are expected to gust to 50 miles per hour, with seas predicted to be generally rough in central and northern atolls and moderate over the south with a wave height of 5 – 8 feet in central and northern atolls and 4 – 6 feet in southern atolls.

The department has also issued a white alert from Haa Alif atoll to Thaa atoll, after predicting strong winds of 19 – 24 miles per hour and gusts of 45 miles per hour with rough seas in the region.

The white alert will be effective through 11pm, Monday.

The archipelago nation is currently experiencing severe spell of bad weather conditions due to southwest monsoon showers and violent winds, due to which the Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has been issuing white and yellow alerts continuously.

Bad weather is expected throughout the country for the next few days.
