Two Covid-19 fatalities have been confirmed in 24 hours.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that deceased are two Maldivian men, who were receiving treatment for coronavirus at the Hulhumalé Medical Facility.

The first victim was a 95-year-old who succumbed to complications of the virus at 6:17pm on Monday. He was declared the 276th Covid-19 victim in the Maldives and the 14th victim of January.

The first Covid-19 fatality of February was confirmed with the passing of a 74-year-old local at around 6:51am on Tuesday.

This has pushed the Covid-19 death toll in the Maldives to 277.

This comes not long after the latest victim was reported; a 66-year-old Covid-19 patient in Naifaru island of Lhaviyani atoll who died on Sunday morning.

15 Covid-19 fatalities have been reported so far this year.

The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. June saw 50 Covid-19 fatalities, followed by 10 in July. Five Covid-19 fatalities were confirmed in August and in September. 12 Covid-19 fatalities were reported in October followed by seven in November. December also saw 12 Covid-19 fatalities.

212 Covid-19 victims were reported last year.
