Four Covid-19 fatalities have been reported in 24 hours.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that the first victim was identified as a 63-year-old Maldivian woman who was seeking treatment at the Hulhumalé Medical Facility (HMF) before being pronounced dead by doctors at around 6:16am on Thursday.

She was identified as the 266th Covid-19 victim in the Maldives, and the fourth one of the ongoing month.

A few minutes earlier HPA reported the death of a 79-year-old Maldivian man who was receiving treatment at the Laamu Covid Management Facility before being pronounced the 267th victim and fifth fatality of January, at around 6:04am.

This was followed by the passing of another local man, aged 76, at 9am. He was being treated at the Addu Covid Management Facility. With this, the Maldives Covid-19 death toll reached 268.

Another fatality was confirmed from Laamu Covid Management Facility hours later at 1:47pm, when a local man, 84, succumbed to complications of the infection.

He was the seventh Covid-19 victim to have been reported this month and the 269th victim reported since Maldives confirmed the first fatality from coronavirus back in April 2020.

These deaths have been reported nearly a week since the last fatality was confirmed, when a Bangladeshi national aged 34 succumbed to complications of the virus while receiving treatment at the health center in Feydhoo district of the southernmost Addu City.

The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June last year while 10 deaths were reported in July. In August, five Covid-19 patients succumbed to the virus, September also saw five Covid-19 fatalities. 12 Covid-19 fatalities were reported in October followed by seven in November. December also saw 12 Covid-19 fatalities.

212 Covid-19 victims were reported last year.
