As part of the series of 12 high-impact monthly community initiatives leading up to Bank of Maldives (BML)’s 40th anniversary to be celebrated in November 2022, a project to refurbish and upgrade the National Library has been announced.
The country’s national bank made the announcement on Thursday, at an event held to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Library of Maldives to upgrade the existing facility.
BML’s CEO and Managing Director Timothy Sawyer signed the MoU on behalf of the bank and Minister of State Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Mohamed Toriq signed on behalf of the government.
BML’s Board of Directors and Executive Management attended the signing ceremony.
The scope of the project includes revamping the entire library including the main reading area, the ‘Kiyavathi’ discussions room, silent reading and research room as well as the Makers Space and the National Collection room.
BML is also to upgrade the existing facilities with new computer systems, audio and video booth for digitization and a security system will be installed at the facility, for the first time.

The country’s national bank launched its scholarship fund during November 2021 as a first of the series, where fully funded international scholarships for three students in the area of Banking and Finance will be provided every year. Open to all, the fund carries the purpose of developing talented young Maldivians in the field.
