Pfizer doses are effective after nine months

The expiration period for Pfizer vaccine, has been extended to nine months.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s Immunization Programme cited the World Health Organization (WHO) having revealed that the Pfizer vaccine doses currently in stock in the Maldives will expire within nine months.

This was revealed during a press conference held by the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) on Wednesday, where HPA’s Hawwa Guraisha revealed that the expiration period was confirmed after analysis and research by the WHO.

It was earlier revealed that Pfizer vaccine carried a shelf-life of six months.

However, recent analysis and research proved that Pfizer vaccine remained effective up until nine months, with which the shelf-life was extended officially.

Guraisha revealed that with this announcement, the current stock will last until February 2022.

The public health authority recently opened appointments for booster doses against Covid-19, which are to be administered as Pfizer doses. The decision backs the findings of extensive research by relevant authorities as well.

According to HPA, ADK Hospital, Hulhumalé Hospital and Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) will be open for those who wish to receive booster shots against Covid-19, from Saturday to Thursday. Booster doses will be given to those who have passed six months since completing second dose of the vaccination and meet the announced eligibility criteria.
