A record number of Covid-19 cases have been confirmed from Addu City.

According to the Addu Emergency Operations Center (AEOC), a record amount of 51 new coronavirus infections were confirmed from the southernmost city between 6pm Friday and 6pm Saturday. This is the highest figure reported in Addu City, on a daily basis, so far.

The new cases included 21 from Hithadhoo, 12 from Meedhoo, 14 from Feydhoo, two from Maradhoo and one from Maradhoo-Feydhoo as well as one from Hulhudhoo district.

Of recent, Covid-19 cases being reported in the southernmost city have been spiking almost every day.

Active Covid-19 cases in Addu City have been pushed to 396, with 245 persons having been identified as direct contacts.

The Covid-19 situation is worst in Hithadhoo district, with 224 total cases having been confirmed so far.

Addu City has been under monitoring since October. Residents are prohibited from going outdoors between 9pm and 4am.

Although the Covid-19 situation is the city is observed to be worsening, residents have been holding international level as well as national tournaments in celebration of the Republic Day. Residents are also observed to be reckless in adhering to the safety precautions implemented such as the face mask mandate and social distancing, as well as gathering in large groups.
