On the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) underway at Glasgow, Scotland, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has attended the ‘Rediscovering Nitrogen: Solutions and Synergies for Climate Change, Health, Biodiversity and Circular Economy’.

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna, and Secretary of Foreign Relations at the President’s Office Ibrahim Hood accompanied the Maldivian president at the event, where several high-level delegates and state leaders from around the globe including President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Baroness Patricia Scotland, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth were in attendance.

Baroness Patricia applauded the Maldives during the event, noting that Maldives is a nation that delivers. Baroness Patricia went on to acknowledge the island nation’s efforts to advocate and actively work towards alleviating the effects of the climate emergency.

Hosted by the government of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the International Nitrogen Management System (INMS), the ‘Rediscovering Nitrogen’ side-event at COP26 was a part of the Nitrogen4NetZero series of events.

The theme of the event mirrors the upcoming 250th anniversary of the scientific discovery of nitrogen in Scotland and also paves way for the rediscovery of nitrogen for climate and environmental action.

Revolving around the goals to awareness on the importance of nitrogen for climate action and to work with governments to prepare their positions related to nitrogen on the path to COP26, the Nitrogen4NetZero is a developing international initiative that sheds the spotlight on the need for sustainable nitrogen management as part of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
