A second Covid-19 fatality has been confirmed in less than 24 hours.

This comes hours after the Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed the 241st Covid-19 victim, identified as an 86-year-old Maldivian man who was receiving treatment at the Addu Covid Management Facility before succumbing to complications of the virus at around 12:10am on Tuesday.

At 1:10pm the same day, a 74-year-old man, another Maldivian, was pronounced dead, making him the second Covid-19 victim to have been reported from Addu Covid Management Facility on Tuesday.

With this, Maldives Covid-19 death toll has risen to 242. 11 Covid-19 fatalities have been reported so far in October.

This comes less than a week after the last coronavirus fatality was reported when a 44-year-old local woman receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Hulhumalé Medical Facility died on October 21.

Of the 242 deaths linked to coronavirus reported in the Maldives so far, 192 have been reported so far this year.

The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June while 10 deaths were reported in July. In August, five Covid-19 patients succumbed to the virus. September also saw five deaths.

Maldives reported its first Covid-19 fatality in April 2020.
