A cyber security law will be enacted in the next two years, states the minister of environment, climate change and technology Aminath Shauna.
Noting the issues within cyber security while detailing the ministry’s work on RaajjeTV's 'Fala Surukhee' programme, the minister commented that efforts are being made to solve them.
She added that an agreement has been made with Microsoft while stressing the importance of the use of true software.
The low priority given to the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) was pointed out by the minister while referring to the improvements to be brought to the center that she comments on the cyber security act to be enacted in the next two years.
Furthermore, she highlights services have improved since internet pricing was lowered by the government.
She added that efforts required are different as the country is headed into a future of digital economy, while stressing the need for more human resources. The restructuration of the EPA has commenced as well with the final result to be seen two years from now with more resources being utilized, she adds regarding the agency which falls under the ministry’s umbrella.
In addition, she points out that expenditure for oil will be decreased when goals are set for renewable energy. In order to do so, discussions are underway with banks to open up the a financial system. A crucial aspect of this decision is to allow private parties to access renewable energy. Emphasizing the already available options, the minister pointed out that efforts are being made to begin a home solar program with FENAKA Corporation to put up solar panels in residences.
The minister further assures that the drawbacks of waste management will be solved through a project conducted with the ADB for which efforts are underway in collaboration with a German consultant. When the project is executed, waste brought into Thilafushi shall be sorted, solving major issues currently being faced. Islands without proper waste storing facilities, shall be provided with them, alongside upgrades that need to be brought to existing facilities, the minister comments. Waste management shall begin within the year in the facility in Vandhoo, with a similar facility to be built in Addu City after the discussions, she added.
A management plan of the protected areas in the country is being drafted, with the process having gone as far as the current efforts to include them in the respective councils' jurisdiction. The goal is to have these councils enforce the protection of the natural locations in their area, the minister states while noting the shaping of the ministry’s efforts to fit the balance of environment protection and economic progression and development.
The minister points to the improvements coming to GEMS within the week. GEMS needs these developments to succeed in the ceasing of use of paper within the government. The aim is to digitalize all government offices in the following year, she stated.
