Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched an investigation into a case of individuals’ personal information being sold on social media platforms.

This was confirmed by the Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Mohamed Mabrook Aziz via Twitter on Thursday night, revealing that the case of "a group allegedly selling personal information of individuals on social media" has surfaced.

Further details in connection to the case and investigation process are yet to be shared with the public.

Mabrook revealed that MPS will be following up with further information.

While Mabrook did not go into details of the case, there have recently been complaints of women's phone numbers and snap IDs being sold on a Telegram channel.

Similar cyber crimes that have frequented the Maldivian communities include the leaking of photos and videos as well as personal information of individuals with the purpose of blackmailing them.

Cyber crimes are a growing concern in the island nation.
