A Brazilian woman caught attempting to smuggle drugs into Maldives has been remanded for 15 days.

While her remand hearing was held on Friday, police said that she was issued a 15-day remand which will end on September 13.

She was remanded on the basis that she had brought in the over 16 kilos of drugs into Maldives to conduct illegal businesses. Noting that there are no other suspects, the court ruled to remand her due to risk of fleeing as well as threats to community.

Maldives Customs Service informed that the 29-year-old Brazilian was stopped due to suspicious behavior on August 18. Officers then tested the substance discovered in her luggage which tested positive as cocaine.

Further, Customs stated that a total of 16.723 kilos of drugs were confiscated from the woman, with a market value of MVR 83 million.
