Speaker and former President, Mohamed Nasheed will return to the Maldives next month.
The former president is currently in the United Kingdom, having traveled there from Germany for additional treatment for injuries sustained in the bomb attack in Maldives capital back in May. While Nasheed was the target of the attack, investigators have since said that the attackers aimed to kill him; while a number of suspects linked to the attack are in police custody, investigators confirmed that they support extremist ideologies and deemed the Nasheed as an "infidel".
The former president was taken to ADK Hospital immediately after the attack, where he underwent 16 hours of "life-saving" surgery.
While Nasheed left Germany on May 13, his brother Dr. Ibrahim Nashid has revealed that the former president is to return home in September.
Dr. Nashid added Nasheed is required to change his medication and treatment every week for a total of three weeks, until then.
While speaking at Clubhouse’s ‘Hulhudhoo Voice’ club earlier this week, the former president had announced plans to return to Maldives in September. Nasheed said he wished to come home soon, adding that staying in a foreign country for so long has not been easy.
He also noted that the attack on him was just the beginning of something bigger as he believes that a huge network of people was involved. Nasheed added that he does not believe that authorities have caught all involved in the attack.
Nasheed further stated that he does not wish for anyone to face the consequences of a second bombing incident and that relevant authorities must take necessary steps in order to put religious extremists behind bars. Moreover, he noted that the government must implement what is recommended in the parliament committee on national security forces, or the 241 committee’s report as soon as possible.
