Over 263,000 persons have been fully vaccinated against the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in the Maldives.
According to the latest vaccination update publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), 1,010 vaccination doses were administered nationwide on Wednesday, including 71 first doses and 939 second doses.
Under the government’s “Covid-19 Dhifaau” inoculation drive, 210 Greater Malé residents and 800 atoll residents were vaccinated nationwide on Wednesday.
Only three residents in the capital city received first doses, the remaining 68 first doses were administered to atoll residents. Of the second doses, 732 were given to atoll residents, with the remaining 207 administered to Malé residents.
The total number of persons to been fully vaccinated against the global pandemic has been pushed to 263,067 with these developments, whereas the number of persons who have received first doses sits at 321,594. This means that 58,527 persons are awaiting their second vaccination shots.
There are currently three mobile teams active across six vaccination centers in the capital region and 176 vaccination centers spanning outlying atolls.
The incumbent administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched the “Covid-19 Dhifaau” inoculation drive on February 1.
Authorities resumed administering the Oxford AstraZeneca Covishield vaccination on July 4 after months, on an appointment-basis. Vaccinations across outlying atolls are also proceeding at a swift pace. On Wednesday, authorities will resume administering second doses of Sinopharm to those who have observed three weeks since receiving the first jab at Senahiya Hospital.
In mid-July the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) revealed that 50 percent of the eligible population in Maldives has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19. In his address to the public in commemoration of Independence Day on Tuesday, President Solih revealed that the government aims to have 90 percent of the eligible population vaccinated by August. On Wednesday, the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) revealed that they will be kickstarting the last Covid-19 vaccination campaign or the "final push" across Maldives populous capital Malé City on Saturday. The campaign began in outlying atolls on July 27.
Maldives has received the first shipment of Singapore’s AstraZeneca vaccine dosages and HEOC has assured that the country has acquired sufficient doses to vaccinate those acquiring second doses as well.
