Home minister, Imran Abdulla has stated that the investigation of the May 6 terror attack on former President and current Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has been the most difficult, yet successful investigation conducted by the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
While the Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed briefed the public on the May 6 terror attack at a press conference held on Saturday, the home minister stated in a Tweet that the investigation into the May 6 terror attack has been the biggest, most difficult and most triumphant inspection the police has ever carried out. The minister pointed out that this mission was successful due to the coordination and support of different authorities and hundreds of police officers.
Imran further expressed confidence that the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office would do everything in their power to see through this case to the very end, after the hard work put into the investigation by the police service.
During the press conference held on Saturday, the police commissioner highlighted that there has been a total of three attempts on former President Mohamed Nasheed’s life since 2019.
A total of 10 people has now been arrested in relation to the attack, including one identified as a leader from Addu City. Investigations against four have concluded and were forwarded for prosecution last week. The PG has office until August 4 to decide on pressing charges.
Police shared new details, as well as the movements of the suspects on the day of the attack as well as the day before, at Saturday's press conference. They also indicated that some of the attackers are seeking plea deals, however, did not elaborate further on the matter.
PG Hussain Shameem, who also joined Saturday's press conference, noted delays in the investigation but stressed that these were Covid-19 related.
The investigation into the May 6 attack is being conducted with assistance from the United States, as well as the Australian Federal Police.
