President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been presented with the historical inquiry report on the terrorist attack against former president and current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

The Majlis committee on national security services or the 241 committee presented the inquiry report, dubbed by Speaker Nasheed as “one of the most thorough reports” by a parliamentary committee, to the president on Sunday.

MP for north-Hithadhoo constituency and Chairperson of the 241 committee, Mohamed Aslam presented the inquiry report to the president during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Sunday.

During the meeting, President Solih is to have acknowledged the significance of the inquiry as well as applauded the “outstanding” efforts of the committee.

In order to make the necessary amendments in accordance with the report’s recommendations, the president has assured that the report’s findings will be reviewed carefully and shared with the National Security Council (NSC).

The president expressed gratitude to the parliamentary committee for their “diligent” work, within such a short period of time.

Expressing confidence that the government will pick up the recommendations in the report, members of the committee expressed thanks to the president for the government’s continued support during their investigation, noting that state institutions and government agencies had been very helpful and cooperative in inquiries.

Chief of Staff at the President’s Office Ali Zahir, People’s Majlis Secretary-General Fathimath Niusha and the Majlis Director of Legal Affairs Ahmed Nazim Mohamed accompanied the committee chair during the meeting.

The 241 committee started their inquiry on May 24 and the report compiled by it was approved by the Majlis on July 8. The report included 45 recommendations including mandating Maldives Police Service (MPS) to monitor Nasheed’s residence at all times.

Nasheed was targeted in an assassination attempt on May 6, as he was heading out to attend an event in an island. The attack, which saw a remote-controlled IED explode near his residence in the center of Malé City, caused serious injuries to the ex-president who was rushed to the hospital within seven minutes after being knocked to the ground by the blast, which was dubbed far more powerful than the explosion in Sultan Park, 2007.
