The People’s Majlis has passed to extend the ongoing second session of the year.
Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla at the start of Wednesday’s sitting announced the need to extend the session to conclude pending work, stressing that some committees have requested additional time to complete important work.
While a vote was taken on Wednesday afternoon, 38 lawmakers voted in favour of extending the second session to July 8.
While the first session of the People’s Majlis was from 4 February to 29 April, the second session started on 17 May and was to conclude on June 30. The third session is to commence on August 16, and continue until November.
The People’s Majlis’ is currently working on amendments to the Penal Code and Anti-Terrorism Act while its committee on national security services is conducting an inquiry into the security breach that led to an assassination attempt on Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed.
