Over 1,000 people were fined for breaching Covid-19 safety rules in 24 hours.

Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Mohamed Mabrook Aziz revealed this during the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC)’s Covid-19 press briefing on Sunday.

He said this includes 267 people who violated the mask rules, 603 that violated curfew rules and 147 people for violating vehicle restrictions.

With daily Covid-19 cases soaring above 1,000 into the beginning of May, authorities confirmed it as a “fourth wave” and responded by strengthening Covid-19 precautionary measures and guidelines in place.

An unofficial curfew was introduced in the Male’ region in mid-May, with a curfew imposed from 4pm to 8am and residents requiring permits to be out even outside curfew hours. Further, a requirement was made for vaccinated individuals to quarantine for 14 days after traveling to outlying islands, as part of the work to stop the spread of the virus.

Since then cases have been declining gradually with less than 300 new cases reported the last three days. Hospitalizations have been decreasing.
