Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has been summoned to the People’s Majlis as it continues its investigation into the terror attack against Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed.
The investigation is being carried out by the parliament’s committee on national security services, or the 241 committee.
The committee is to summon several officials including high-ranking officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) for the investigation. Director of Counter-Terrorism, Superintendent of Police Fareedh Ismail was questioned by the committee as well on Saturday.
When the committee initially notified the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) that they would be summoning individual officers for questioning, the institution had issued a statement that they would respond to questioning as a whole institute and that individual officers cannot be summoned for questioning.
With this being said, the committee has since summoned Chief of Defense Force and Vice Chief of Defense Force for questioning.
The 241 committee has also announced that individual police officers will be summoned for questioning regarding the assassination attempt on the speaker’s life, on May 6.
CP Hameed was questioned regarding police intelligence in connection to the case. During a press, CP Hameed had clarified that police intelligence had not received reports of the assassination attempt against Nasheed.
Earlier, CP Hameed stated that investigations were being conducted in accordance with guidance from foreign experts who have joined the probes, in a highly-organized matter.
MPS and MNDF’s presence has remained across the Greater Malé Region since the attack and continues to conduct special operations against religious extremism across Maldives. Although four suspects were initially arrested in connection to the case, including a prime suspect, authorities in late May revealed that 14 suspects had been arrested with suspected links to the assassination attempt on Nasheed.
