Three people were arrested in Hulhumale' in an operation conducted on Thursday night

Three people suspected of extremism have been arrested by Maldives Police Service (MPS) in Hulhumale'.

Law enforcement officers arrested three people in a special operation conducted in Hulhumale' ward of Male' City on Thursday evening and well into the night.

Reports suggest that one of the three people arrested were linked to the terror attack against former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) have declined to comment further on the arrests at this time.

Four people have been arrested thus far with links to the assassination attempt against former president Mohamed Nasheed. Adhuham Ahmed, Mujaz Ahmed, Thahumeen Ahmed and Ahmed Fathih have all been remanded until investigations conclude in this case, and have aslo tested positive for Covid-19.

Following the dangerous explosion which targeted Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed outside his home on 6 May 2021, the Police and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) have been conducting a number of special operations to crack down on terror and extremism across the Maldives. As such, Abdulla Ali Manik and Mohamed Nazim, two people believed to be leaders of extremists factions have previously attested in operations across Male' and Hulhumale'.

While they have been remanded for a period of 15 days, special operations conducted by authorities also saw nine people with suspected links to the international terror organization Islamic State arrested and remanded from Addu City.
