Chairperson of the People's Majlis Committee on National Security Services and MP for North-Hithadhoo constituency Mohamed Aslam has confirmed that the committee will be launching an enquiry into the security breaches leading up to the assassination attempt against former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

At a press conference held on Monday, Chairperson for the National Security Services Committee (241 Committee) Mohamed Aslam stated that the committee would be launching an inquiry into the security breach that endangered Speaker Nasheed's life with guidance from foreign experts. Aslam stated that the inquiry would focus not on investigating the attack, but on whether national security forces had received any information on a threat to former president Nasheed's life in the days leading up to the attack, and their response to the perceived dangers.

MP Aslam also noted that the enquiry would focus on the how authorities were providing security to high-profile leaders in the Maldives, and what parameters their operations were based around. In addition to this, the committee will be overseeing how Speaker Nasheed's security was managed specifically, how financial intelligence was being collected and acted on, in addition to how well their operations were structured within the limits of the law.

Aslam stated that the committee had compiled a timeline for the efforts to be conducted, and that they would be posing questions to relevant authorities in analyzing the security breaches leading up to the attack against Speaker Nasheed.

During a summons to the People's Majlis on Monday, Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla stated that an earlier investigation into attempt to bug the offices of Speaker Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva at parliament had stalled. Mohamed Haleem, Sergeant at Arms for the 19th Peoples Majilis, had been suspended from his post pending the results of the investigation earlier in January this year, two months after the allegations had come to light. Minister Imran stated that while the Police was conducting investigations in to the case, progress had been stalled, and that he would need to review exact details in order to further comment on the delays.
