The People's Majlis on Tuesday approved the names sent by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for appointment as non-resident ambassadors to five countries.

The Foreign Relations Committee studied the matter of appointing ambassadors to the countries.

Non-resident ambassadors were appointed to Switzerland, Canada, Egypt, Kuwait, and Bhutan.

Among the names sent by the president for appointment as non-resident ambassadors, for Canada, the president sent the name of Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, the current ambassador of Maldives to the United States. He was approved for appointment to the position with the support of 71 lawmakers.

For Egypt and Kuwait, the president sent the name of Ahmed Sareer, the current ambassador of Maldives to Saudi Arabia, for appointment as non-resident ambassador. 71 lawmakers voted to approve his appointment as non-resident ambassador to Egypt, while 73 lawmakers voted to approve his appointment as non-resident ambassador to Kuwait.

For Bhutan, the president sent the name of Shiuneen Rasheed, the current ambassador of Maldives to Bangladesh, for appointment as non-resident ambassador. Shiuneen’s appointment to the position was approved with the support of 72 lawmakers.

For Switzerland, the president sent the name of Salma Rasheed, the Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations, for appointment as non-resident ambassador. Her appointment to the position was approved with the support of 74 lawmakers.

The approval for appointing ambassadors to some countries was passed through separate votes taken at the parliament.
