The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has received over MVR six million for Zakat-Al-Fitr this year.
The ministry revealed that they had received Zakat payments from 164,392 residents of the capital, Malé City.
The Islamic Ministry stated that the funds had been collected between the first and final day of Ramazan, totaling MVR 6,746,896.
The ministry revealed that Zakat had been issued to 1,494 persons in the Male' region, from a total of 1,498 persons registered as poor in the nation's capital city. In addition to this, MVR 472,096 was issued as Zakat to Amaanveshi, the children's shelter and the center for those with special needs in Guraidhoo island of Kaafu atoll.
Funds were deposited to the accounts of those who provided details by the 28th day of Ramazan, totaling 1,472 individuals.
22 additional individuals were provided Zakat funds on the 30th day as well.
Only those registered as low-income families or individuals are eligible to receive Zakat. Zakat collected from an island must be issued to its poor before Eid Al-Fitr, and the amount may differ based on where a person is registered to receive Zakat.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs stated that Zakat Al-Firt collected from Male' City and islands across the Maldives had been distributed to its rightful recipients before Eid day, and revealed further details of Zakat distribution in islands would be shared with the ministry by local councils.
