Former President and current Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has departed to Germany.
The speaker departed to Germany on an air ambulance, for further treatment for injuries attained in the terrorist attack that targeted his life on May 6, on Thursday morning after his discharge was approved by ADK Hospital.
The People's Majlis revealed that the German Honorary Consul designated to the Maldives, Christian Freiherr Von Stetten is to extend assistance in Nasheed's transport as well as treatment expenses. The trip was arranged by the government of Germany in cooperation with the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the Maldives Embassy in Germany.
Eva Abdulla, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and also a member of Nasheed’s family, shared a video of Nasheed’s take-off on Thursday morning.
The injured former president’s family has also confirmed that Nasheed is heading to Germany was further treatment. Nasheed’s family is also to have cited that he is recovering well and that doctors have approved for him to consume liquids.
Nasheed underwent extensive surgeries that lasted 16 hours following the explosion. He had 10 pieces of razor wedged inside his body and shrapnel removed. Doctors said that the extent of his trauma was not in the norm even for trained doctors.
Nasheed was taken off life support and was admitted at the Critical Care Unit of ADK Hospital before being released. Doctors have stressed that there is a high risk of infection. Nasheed’s recovery will be monitored in Germany.
Three suspects including a prime suspect of the terrorist attack have been arrested and remanded thus far. The mastermind behind the attack had strapped an IED to a motorcycle parked near the speaker’s residence and detonated it at around 8:27pm on May 6 as Nasheed was heading out to attend an event on an island. Nasheed was knocked to the ground following the explosion and his security personnel acted fast in transporting him to safety. He was taken to the hospital in approximately seven minutes. Nasheed’s security personnel and MNDF officers had attained several injuries in the explosion as well.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has since revealed that the perpetrators behind the inhumane attack will be brought to justice after thorough investigations are conducted.
