Former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed is reportedly recovering well, and will depart to Germany on Thursday morning, his family have confirmed.

President Nasheed is currently receiving treatment at ADK Hospital, after having undergone multiple surgeries for injuries sustained following an assassination attempt on his person earlier this week.

Speaking to Raajje MV, Speaker Nasheed's brother Dr. Ibrahim Nashid stated that preparations were underway to have former president Nasheed transported to Germany for further medical care. Dr. Ibrahim Nashid added that Speaker Nasheed had been recovering well, and had left his hospital bed for a chair as early as four days after the attempt on his life. In addition to this, he added that with recommendation from doctors, former president Nasheed was now able to consume soups and liquids, and was preparing for his departure to Germany on Thursday.

Maldives' first democratically elected president Mohamed Nasheed underwent extensive surgeries that lasted 16 hours following the explosion that targeted him outside of his home on 6 May 2021. He had 10 pieces of razor wedged inside his body and shrapnel removed. Doctors said that the extent of his trauma was not in the norm, and after having been placed on a ventilator shortly after surgery, it is believed Speaker Nasheed will be receiving further medical care to speed up his recovery while abroad.

Three suspects including a prime suspect of the terrorist attack that targeted Speaker of Parliament and former president Mohamed Nasheed have been arrested thus far.
