Russian tourists continue to dominate the market for Maldives' tourism, with the country contributing the most number of arrivals to the Maldives in May 2021.
Latest statistics made public by the Ministry of Tourism show that a majority of Russian tourists visited the Maldives in the first three days of May. 22 percent of all arrivals recorded had been from Russia, with the second-highest number of tourists reported to have arrived from neighboring India at 21 percent of all arrivals.
In addition to this, Ukraine contributed 5.5 percent of arrivals to Maldives in May 2021, with Germany following closely at 5.2 percent of arrivals. 4 percent of arrivals were reported from Kazakhstan, with an additional 3 percent of arrivals reported from the United States of America. 2.8 percent of arrivals to the Maldives in May 2021 were from Romania and Ukraine, with 2.3 percent of arrivals attributed o the Czech Republic and France according to Tourism Ministry statistics.
India had remained a top-source market for Maldivian tourism despite the onset of the global Covid-19 pandemic. However, as a record number of Covid-19 cases are being reported in India at this time, world countries have begun imposing restrictions on travelers from India.
Tourism Ministry statistics show that Maldives tourism in 2021 has grown by 2.8 percent in comparison to that of 2020, but still remains 39.6 percent lower than the pre-Covid statistics reported in 2019.
