Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched an investigation into the sexual assault of a toddler.

The police institution revealed that the case was lodged at the department of crimes against children at the Family and Child Protection, after a three-year-old toddler fell victim to sexual assault.

In a statement publicized on Thursday, police revealed that the child had been consulted with a doctor for any signs of injury as well as a psychologist for any signs of trauma from the abuse.

MPS is currently working to compile reports based on the psychological report of the child and have affirmed that they are collaborating with the child protection department to ensure the toddler’s safety.

Police went on to reveal that efforts are currently underway to collect evidence in relation to the case, at a time the institution has stated that such crimes against children will be probed as serious crimes.

The public has also been reaffirmed that the police institution will take all the necessary measures and action required in the case, without further delay.

At a time reported rape and sexual assault cases are increasing, police continue to urge the public to come forth with cases of sexual assault and abuse instead of hiding the information as such cases are taken by the institution, very seriously.
