More and more Covid-19 cases are being detected from outside the nation's capital in recent weeks

162 new cases of Covid-19 were reported across the Maldives on Tuesday, with an additional 112 recoveries confirmed from the infection nationwide.

76 of the 162 new cases reported Tuesday were from the Male' area, with 68 additional cases reported from inhabited islands, and 14 new cases from operational resorts.

Health authorities tested a total of 2,873 samples for the infection between Monday and Tuesday.

With this, the Maldives total Covid-19 case tally is now 26,667. The active case count had recently topped 3,000, but has since decreased to 2,873. By sundown on Tuesday, 74people remain admitted in hospitals for Covid-19 treatment across the country.

A further 112 recoveries from the infection were reported on Tuesday, bringing the total number of recoveries observed for the infection in Maldives up to 23,803.

With several islands placed under monitoring, Covid-19 health and safety restrictions are being strengthened across the Maldives in order to control transmission of the virus. Infections are concerning in regions outside the capital, such as in Lhaviyani and Thaa Atoll, with AA. Mathiveri also under monitoring after 10 samples came back positive for Covid-19. The Health Protection Agency has been steadily easing measures in the Greater Male' region, where the number of new cases being detected had been decreasing prior to a spike over the weekend on Saturday.

As the fasting month of Ramazan is now underway, authorities have been working to control Covid-19 transmissions without initiating a city-wide lockdown. The curfew and vehicle movement restriction order in effect across the nation's capital was also dissolved recently.

However, the state of public health emergency across the country has been extended for another month until 4 May, with authorities most recently having confirmed the 71st death from Covid-19 in Maldives. Two deaths linked to the infection were confirmed on Friday, with the most recent death reported on Tuesday, including which a total of 23 people have died from the infection in Maldives in 2021. With a Covid-19 mortality rate of 0.26 percent, most of those who have passed away after contracting the infection in the island nation are elderly persons.

Public health authorities continue to stress the importance of following Covid-19 health and safety measures set to control transmission of the virus, including social distancing, avoiding public gatherings, maintaining hand hygiene and effective masking while outdoors.
