Jailed former president Yaameen Abdul Gayyoom has been brought to Male' as per the request of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

A media official for the Maldives Correctional Service confirmed that Yaameen had been brought to MPS in the capital sometime on Sunday. Corrections confirmed that the jailed ex-president had been brought to Male' on request of MPS, but declined to provide further details as to why he had been transported to Male' City.

Last month, Yaameen had requested the Ministry of Home Affairs and the President's Office to have him transferred to house arrest while serving the remainder of his sentence.

Former President Yaameen is presently serving a five-year prison sentence in relation to the MMPRC Corruption scandal; he was convicted of money laundering after having embezzled and transferred to his personal account, USD one million from the acquisition cost reserved for the state in the leasing and development of GA. Yaameen is also facing charges of money laundering and accepting bribes while in office for having transferred into his own account USD 1.1 million from the acquisition cost of R. Fuhgiri under the MMPRC grand corruption case. The hearings for these trials are ongoing at the Criminal Court.
