President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has extended felicitations to all four candidates who won the race for mayoral seats across four cities of Maldives during Saturday’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections.
Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Mabrook Aziz revealed that the president had held telephone conversations with all four mayors-elect respectively following their wins in Saturday’s polls.
During his respective phone calls, the president reaffirmed the government’s commitment to extend full cooperation into ensuring development projects are carried out under a decentralized governance.
Opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu who was also a former housing minister, won the race for Malé City mayorship.
The remaining three seats were won by candidates representing the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), with Mohamed Athif having secured the mayorship for Kulhudhuffushi City. Athif has been elected as the first mayor of Kulhudhuffushi, which was designated as a city during the Solih administration. Ali Nizar is the mayor-elect of Addu City followed by Ismail Rafeeq who won the race for the mayoral seat of Fuvahmulah City.
